When it comes to survival, most have the mentality that weapons and food are the key drivers in surviving or not surviving. What little people thing about, which can have the biggest impact on your survival rate, is shelter. As we see time and time again, mother nature can be a beast. When “she’s” in a really bad mood, she can reck havoc on anything and anyone.
Survival shelters will give you a leg up on your “competition” by providing you the necessary insulation during both warm and cold seasons. They certainly aren’t going to keep you safe like a well heated or cooled home would do. But, hopefully you’re looking at a temporary scenario in which you need temporary shelter.
There are many survival shelters on the market. Here at SurvivalistArmory, we’ve compiled a list of shelters that are highly rated and reasonable in cost. Cost is a relative term; most would pay anything to save their life or their children’s life.
The Survival Shack is made from mylar thermal material. This material is designed to reflect 90% of one’s body heat, keeping you warm all night long. It’s great for a survival scenario as it’s light weight and compact so it can easily stow away in your bug out bag. The tent can easily be set up within a few minutes. This is great as you can use more of the day for hiking and trekking vs spending time setting up camp for the night.
The only con that one could have with this tent is that’s it’s only 2-person. So, if you’ve got more than two people in your group, you could be a little snug. Or, you can buy a few tents just in case.
SE ET3683 Tube Tent
The SE ET3683 Tube Tent is another best of for survival shelters. Like the Survival Shack, the Tube Tent has an aluminum coating which keeps the interior of the tent extra warm. The base of this tent is 82” with a width of 36”. This means that you might be able to fit two adults into the tent. So, if know your party is going to exceed two persons, buying a couple of tents might be a good idea.
Both a pro and con of this Tube Tent is the fact that the outer shell of the tent is orange. If you’re looking to be seen, this tent can help. If you’re looking to hide yourself from others, if the survival scenario has turned dire, then this tent might not be for you.
S.O.L Emergency Shelter Kit
If you really want a grab and go solution that takes up the least room possible, the S.O.L. Emergency Shelter Kit will do just that. It’s a small shelter kit that comes neatly packed away inside of a small pouch. The shelter is more for lean-to’s where you might not have the time or space to construct the type of shelters referenced above.
Two cons that would could find with this survival shelter is that it could only fit one person comfortably and you might have to do some on the spot modifications in order to make this shelter work for your needs.
Grizzly Gear Tube Tent
The Grizzly Gear Tube Tent is an excellent survival shelter. It’s made of mylar with a reflective backing which will keep you insulted from the outdoors and keep the interior nice and warm. Although lightweight, it’s sturdy and wind-resistant. It’s also water resistant. This tube tent will fit two adults comfortably. Like the other tents on this list, if you plan on having multiple individuals in your party, you may consider purchasing two or three of these.
One con, according to customer responses is that it’s recommended that you purchase a separate paracord that can better support the structure.
Survivor X Tube Tent
The Survivor X Tube Tent is our last “best of” survival shelters. This tube tent comes with 5 meters of suspension paracord that can hold up to 550lbs. So, not only will it support the tent itself, it can be used for other things as well such as rope climbing, tie downs, etc. This tent also has a reflective backing which helps you retain 99% of your body heat in cold, wintery conditions. The package size is perfect for a survival scenario as it can easily be packed away in your bug out bag.
